You've Been Upgraded!

By Sara Karman — Sara's Health & Fitness, Edgerton, WI

Have you ever gone on a trip and found out you have been UPGRADED? Maybe it is for a flight, car rental, or hotel room. Everything feels like a treat -- better seats, better ride, better sleep.

Well, that is what your body feels like when you UPGRADE your food choices.

When you STOP feeding it ultra-processed food and START giving it food that is flooded with benefits, your body feels like it got an upgrade! It is all about swapping out things that block you from your results and replacing them with foods that move you closer to your goals.

Here are upgrade swaps to try:

1) Chips to Nuts
Potato chips are high in sodium, contain unhealthy fats, and their refined carbs spike your blood sugar. Nuts contain heart-healthy unsaturated fats, fiber, and micronutrients. People who regularly eat nuts are 14% less likely to develop cardiovascular disease.
Tip: One serving = about 1 oz or 1/4 cup. Savor each bite.

2) Cookies to Dark Chocolate
You are swapping refined sugars for cocoa flavanols, which can help lower blood pressure and improve how your blood vessels function.
Moderation: 1 ounce = 1 serving.

3) Soda to Herbal Tea
A single 12-oz soda contains 7 to 10 teaspoons of sugar. Herbal teas are a much better choice -- chamomile relaxes, peppermint energizes.

4) Steak to Salmon
You are swapping saturated fats for omega-3 fatty acids, which lower blood triglycerides and reduce plaque buildup in your arteries.

5) Pasta to Veggies
Starchy carbs contain lots of calories with fewer nutrients. Swapping in vegetables boosts your micronutrient intake AND reduces inflammation.

As you can see, upgrading your food choices has nothing to do with deprivation. It is all about foods that taste great and have great benefits.

Always here for you! -- Sara
