What To Eat Before You Workout

By Sara Karman — Sara's Health & Fitness, Edgerton, WI

Pre-workout fuel helps you perform your best and get the most out of every session.

Timing:

  • Eat a full meal 2 to 3 hours before your workout
  • Or have a small snack 45 to 60 minutes prior if you do not have much time

What to include:

  • Carbohydrates -- your body's preferred fuel source during exercise
  • Protein -- helps prevent muscle breakdown
  • Moderate healthy fat -- provides sustained energy

Quick pre-workout snack ideas:

  • Banana with nut butter
  • Greek yogurt with berries
  • Toast with avocado and egg
  • Oats with protein powder

About fasted workouts: Research shows mixed results for weight loss. Some people do fine working out on an empty stomach; others feel weak and perform poorly. Listen to your body.

The key is to experiment and find what works for you. Fuel up, show up, and crush your workout! -- Sara
