Cravings are one of the biggest challenges when it comes to eating well. But they do not have to win.
The key insight: most cravings last only 15 to 20 minutes if you do not act on them. That means your only job is to outlast the craving -- not eliminate it forever.
Two tactics that actually work:
1. Find a diversion
When a craving hits, redirect your attention for 15 to 20 minutes:
- Go for a walk
- Call a friend
- Do a quick workout
- Drink a large glass of water (sometimes cravings are actually thirst)
- Brush your teeth (mint signals "done eating" to your brain)
2. Keep healthier alternatives on hand
You cannot eat what is not there. Stock your kitchen with satisfying alternatives:
- Craving something sweet? Dark chocolate or fresh fruit
- Craving something crunchy? Nuts or veggie sticks with hummus
- Craving something salty? Air-popped popcorn with sea salt
"It only takes a few days of making the switch for cravings to start going away."
The more consistently you choose the better option, the more your taste preferences shift. Your brain actually rewires itself. Give it a chance. -- Sara
