7 Reasons To Build And Keep Muscle

By Sara Karman — Sara's Health & Fitness, Edgerton, WI

I am talking about muscle. Specifically: building and keeping it as you age.

Most people think of strength training as optional -- something athletes do, or younger people trying to look good. But the research is clear: maintaining muscle mass is one of the most important things you can do for your long-term health.

Here are 7 reasons why:

1. Blood sugar management
Muscle tissue is the primary site where your body clears glucose from the blood. More muscle means better blood sugar regulation and lower risk of type 2 diabetes.

2. Maintain strength across all activities
Everyday life requires strength -- carrying groceries, climbing stairs, getting up from a chair. Strong muscles make all of it easier and safer as you age.

3. Calorie burning
Muscle is metabolically active tissue. Research shows that 10 pounds of muscle burns approximately 50 calories per day at rest, compared to just 20 calories for 10 pounds of fat.

4. Mood improvement
Resistance training releases endorphins and can significantly reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety -- sometimes as effectively as medication.

5. Joint and bone health
Strong muscles protect your joints by absorbing impact and reducing strain. Weight-bearing exercise also stimulates bone density, reducing your risk of osteoporosis.

6. Heart health
Regular strength training lowers blood pressure, improves cholesterol levels, and reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease.

7. Overall quality of life
The difference between a 75-year-old who is strong and mobile and one who struggles with daily activities often comes down to decades of consistent movement.
